THE PAGING SYSTEM

All residents are issued a hospital pager (beeper) with a unique pager number to carry at all times while working in the hospital to serve as a means of communication. You can also opt to use the AMS Connect app on your cell phones.

This app compliments our internal paging system and also serves as a HIPAA compliant messaging platform to communicate with other providers in the hospital. Most providers no longer carry a pager and use the app on their cell phones for all pages and communications.

Paging Service Privacy Reminder: To ensure Miteam pages are sent, please use patient name and room number. Do not use MR #, account#, Date of birth or any other HIPPA info.

Important pager numbers to remember:

902: Medical admitting officer (MAO) – Senior

901: MET (medical emergency team) – Senior

196: Private attending physician assistant (PA)

900: Hospitalist on call – Attending

908: Team A METs coverage – Intern A on call

909: Team B METs coverage – Intern B on call

(METs = Medical Emergency Team = Rapid Response team)

TIP: At the beginning of a work day, make sure your pager is available and is not covering other pagers unless you are supposed to.

AMS Connect:

This is a mobile app for pager systems, it’s a two way pager system. You can find most attendings and residents by searching for their name. Some attendings (e.g. nephrology); however, are not using this App as they have a separate account for their private practice and AMS does not allow dual accounts for individual users.

You will also be able to receive a physical pager, however, the available pagers are only one way which means you cannot page/reply back from them.

You will also be able to access AMS connect via the web: https://account.amsconnectapp.com/login

RESIDENT SERVICE

Service Attending/Academic hospitalist

These physicians form our core inpatient teaching faculty. Each one of our "floor" teams is supervised by a service attending.

Team 1: Dr. Ammer Z. Bekele

Team 2: Dr. Ricardo Conti

Team 3: Dr. Selam Tewolde

Team 4: Dr. Martha Baker

Non-teaching or Clinical hospitalists:
These physicians practice hospital medicine only. There is 24/7 hospitalist coverage; the on-call physician carries the 900 pager. They are a non-teaching service. If one of their patients is transferred to the resident team, the care of the patient will now be assumed by a teaching service attending.

Private Attendings:

These physicians have admitting privileges at St. Agnes and will admit patients from their practice to the hospital as needed. The on-call private attending PA carries pager 196. Residents may be asked to carry some of their patients who require close monitoring/care-coordination or have high learning value. These are considered resident service/teaching patients and residents will discuss the daily plan of care with the private attendings.

Consultants:

Subspecialty physicians: e.g. cardiologists, nephrologists, etc.

Other specialties: General surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, etc.

Non-physician consultants: nutritionists, therapists, etc.

Chief Residents:

This year, we have four associate chief residents, who are third year residents. Each one will cover one month at a time as a chief resident, during which he/she will oversee day-to-day residency matters such as conferences and schedules. The three remaining associate chiefs will assist in the day-to-day residency matters

Senior Residents:

These are second-year and third-year residents who are responsible for the direct supervision and teaching of interns. They are your team leaders and are accountable for the patients, interns and students under their supervision. Senior residents are expected to promote an environment of clinical curiosity and learning. They will bring journal articles to review during rounds and set up appropriate frequency of short teaching sessions during and after rounds. They will also assign topics to interns and students to review and present.

Interns:

These are first year residents who are the first line providers for all the patients on the teaching service.

Interns’ duties include: writing orders, daily progress notes, admission H&P notes and discharges. They are also expected to formulate their own assessments and plans under the supervision of their senior residents and attendings and to communicate with them about any updates on a regular basis.

Nurses:

These are your best allies and integral members of your team. Registered nurses in the US typically have an associate or bachelor’s degree. They have the most direct and continuous interaction with your patients and therefore the primary source of information for changes in a patient's condition.

Nursing Tech:

They are typically trained to perform a limited number of procedures to support registered nurses, under whose supervision they work. These typically include taking vital signs, bathing patients and moving patients.

Medical Assistant (MA):

An allied health professional that supports the work of physicians and other health professionals in a clinic setting. These includes obtaining patients' vital signs, administering medications and injections/vaccines, facilitate information/labs/imaging to physician before patient’s arrival when available, preparing and handling medical instruments and supplies, and collecting and preparing specimens of bodily fluids and tissues for laboratory testing, providing resources to patient’s as deemed necessary after office visit.

PATIENTS AT SAINT AGNES:

Service Patients:

Patients that are admitted to the resident team under the care of the academic hospitalist. Both the senior resident and the intern are responsible for the management of these patients under the supervision of the service teaching-attending physician. The senior resident and interns must keep the service attending informed and updated regarding the care of their patients.

Private Patients:

Patients that are admitted under the care of a private attending physician, who has admitting privileges at Saint Agnes, and the resident team. The resident team is responsible for developing a management plan for these patients and then discussing the plan with the private attending physician daily.
